Creating a Splash Page for Your Online Portfolio Website

Sometimes it may be desirable to create a "Splash" page which acts as an introduction to the work on your portfolio. When you first build a Crevado Online Portfolio Website it will not include a Splash page but it's really easy to create one.

How to Create a Splash Page:

From Crevado Admin, click Pages:

Next, click on the Create Page button on the right of the screen:

A pop-up will open entitled Create New Page. Once here, under the heading Page Type click on the downward arrow. This will reveal a dropdown menu of the Page Type options and you need to select the Splash Page option by clicking on it, as shown below:

You can then fill in the other fields on the Create New Page pop-up, i.e. the Link Title and the Page Title, with whatever description you wish (for this article we have called both fields "Home"). When you are done, click the Create button:

Once you click on the Create button you are automatically brought back to the Pages area of your Crevado Admin. A yellow pop-up will appear at the top of the screen stating: "Page was successfully created".

Now, in your Pages area of Crevado Admin you will see that the new splash page (that we have named Home for this article), which you have just created, is at the top of your list of Pages. You now need to populate your splash page with some images! Do this by clicking on the Edit Page Content button to the right of the page title:

From here, you are able to populate your Splash Page by clicking on the Upload button and choosing images one by one:

For every image that you upload (one image = one slide) you can specify a Strap Line and Strap Line Link. Adding a Strap Line and/or Strap Line Link is optional; the choice is yours! You can add a different Strap Line and/or Strap Line Link to each of your images if you wish.

In the following screenshot you can see what the Strap Line ("Don't Create Limitations") looks like when it's displayed on the Splash Page of our Crevado Online Portfolio Website:

NOTE: If you have also enabled the Strap Line Link then users will be able to click on the strap line to be taken to the link of your choice.

Customizing the Slider on Your Splash Page:

Splash Pages come with a bunch of other customization options which can be found underneath the Slider Management area in the Splash Page Options section:

Splash Images:

When the Cover Entire Screen option is enabled your slider will cover the entire screen.

When you choose Contained Within Page Content Area the slider will appear confined within the content area of the page rather than covering the whole screen - it will appear where content normally appears i.e. contained within the middle of the page.

Use these options to choose whether or not to hide the navigation links and other header items on your Splash Page.

So, once you have decided whether to have a Splash page that covers the entire screen or one that is contained within the page content area (as discussed above), you can then choose to have the site navigation visible or hidden.

You can click on the option to Hide Header Elements, as shown below, to hide the navigation links and other header items:

And here is an example of a Portfolio with the Hide Header Elements selected and a Splash Page that covers the entire screen and has a strap line displayed:

This next example shows Hide Header Elements option enabled, the strap line visible and the Splash page this time is contained within the page content area and not set to the entire screen option. The most obvious difference is the white boarder around the image that is not present with the entire screen option.

Now to the Show Header Elements option where the navigation links and other header items are visible, click on the circle to select it:

And this example shows the same Portfolio with the Show Header Elements enabled, the splash page once again covering the entire screen and strap line displayed:

Finally, this last example is again the splash page contained within the page content area, strap line visible and show header elements also enabled:

Automatically Jumping to a Page after the Slider finishes:

The Jump Page option allows you to automatically take a visitor to another page on your Crevado Online Portfolio after the last slide on your Slider has been viewed. This option is especially useful when combined with a Slider which is set to advance slides automatically.

To set the Jump Page, first click on the Jump Page option box:

Once clicked, select one of your existing pages from the dropdown menu to set it as your Jump Page:

Don't forget to click on the Save button to save your selection.

A yellow pop-up at the top of the page will state Setting Updated. Also, you will see that the Page you have chosen to jump to is now shown in the Jump Page option box:

NOTE: You can change your chosen Jump Page whenever you want, just repeat the above steps and select a different page from the dropdown menu.

You can remove a Jump Page at any time by simply selecting the No Link option from the dropdown:

And of course clicking Save:

Automatically Advance Slider:

This allows you to automatically advance the slider at a predefined interval. Adjust the interval by dragging the blue dot horizontally, or clicking on the desired interval:

This setting allows you to choose whether to show or hide the navigational arrows on your Splash Page Image Slider.

To hide the slider navigation click on the circle to select it:

To show the slider navigation click on the circle to select it:

Here is an example of a Portfolio Splash page with the navigation arrows shown:

As always, we value your feedback, if the Slider doesn't satisfy your needs just let us know!

Attaching PDF or Word Docs Within Custom Content Pages on Your Crevado Online Portfolio

When building your Crevado Online Portfolio Website you may need to link to additional files such as PDF or MS Word documents within the text content of your Custom Content Pages.

You can attach files within any of the Custom Content Pages of your Crevado Online Portfolio Website. It is important to note that only PDF and MS Word Document types are allowed as attachable files. That said, attaching a file within the pages of your Online Portfolio Website is easy!

Firstly, from Crevado Admin, click Pages:

click pages

Locate the Page you wish to edit from the list of your Pages. We are going to use the About Page for our example here. So you locate your About Page and click the related Edit Page Content link as shown below:

edit about page

This will take you to your Portfolio in Live Edit Mode enabling you to change the page content of your About Page.

NOTE: A yellow pop-up at the top of the screen will alert you that you are in Live Edit Mode, it states: "LIVE EDIT mode is active. Click here to go back! or View Live Version".

You can attach the PDF or MS Word Document to your page by positioning the cursor where you want it to be on the page and then clicking on the File button on the Content Editor Toolbar:

A pop-up will open where you can name the file attachment (optional) and then either drag and drop the file attachment or click to select it from your local device:

NOTE: If you choose not to name the file attachment here, it's existing name prior to attaching it will be used. For example, if you saved a PDF as "Diego's Résumé" and then attach it to your content page, "Diego's Résumé" will be the text that will appear on your content page for that attachment.

Below you can see that the file we attached entitled "Diego's Résumé" (it's existing name) is now positioned where we had the cursor on the content page:

You can also attach a file directly to a piece of text on the page by selecting the text and then clicking on the File button. For example, on your "About" page you could attach your résumé. In the example below we typed the text "Check out my résumé!" and then selected this text. Next we need to click on the File button to open the file attachment pop-up area:

As you can see, the selected text has been automatically entered into the name field of the file attachment pop-up. Now we just need to drag the file attachment in or click to select it from our local device:

As you can see below, it has been inserted and attached to the "Check out my résumé!" text. Now when someone views this "About" page and clicks on the "Check out my résumé!" text, they will automatically download the attached résumé:

Of course, you can also View an attachment and/or Edit it, and/or Unlink it by click on it within the content page and clicking on the option you want, as shown below:

That's it - you are done!

How Do I Restrict Access to Certain Galleries in My Portfolio?

NOTE: Privacy Controls are only available to Premium Account holders, for more details see the plan comparison page.

Our Premium Plan features several privacy controls which can be used to restrict access to your entire Crevado Online Portfolio or even just selected Galleries. How you configure the Privacy Controls on your Crevado Portfolio depends on your requirements and your own personal preferences. For example, you might want to restrict access to a Gallery so that only a particular client can view it, or you might have a Gallery of family photos that you want to only share with specific individuals.

There are three main Privacy Controls which you should consider before deciding which is the best fit for your needs:

  • Password Protecting your entire Crevado Portfolio.
  • Password Protecting an individual Gallery or multiple Galleries.
  • Changing the Privacy Control of a Gallery or Galleries from public to private which will require you to provide a direct link to those you wish to have access to them.

Keep reading for a detailed explanation of each of the above!

NOTE: You can use both Password Protection of a Gallery or Galleries and Privacy Control simultaneously. However, it is not advisable to use Portfolio wide Password Protection if you are using either of the other Password Protection options.

Password Protecting Your Entire Portfolio:

By enabling this setting all pages on your online Portfolio will become Password Protected and visitors will be required to enter a password in order to view any page of your Crevado Portfolio.

You can password protect your entire Portfolio from the Settings area of Crevado Admin. So, first click on Settings:

From the Settings Page, scroll down to the blue header Misc Settings and then click on the blue Password Protected Portfolio box:

When you click on the password protected portfolio box, a text box will appear where you can then enter your desired password. Once you enter your password click Save.

NOTE: If you Password Protect your entire Portfolio it will not appear in Google or other search engines. In addition, it is advisable not to use Portfolio wide Password Protection in conjunction with e.g. individual Gallery Password Protection as this will mean the viewer will require two passwords to access that Gallery.

Password Protecting Individual Galleries:

NOTE: Almost any page can be protected with a password and this can be configured in the Page Properties area for that page. For more information see here.

In some cases it may be desirable to have a Public Online Portfolio but also have a way of restricting access to work within certain Galleries.

It is easy to Password Protect any Gallery. To do this simply click on Galleries at the top left of Crevado Admin:

Then click on the Gallery you wish to edit to select it:

Scroll down to the Gallery Settings area and here you will see that Password Protection is the first option.

Click on the Password Protection blue area and a text box will appear into which you can type your password:

Once you enter in your password click Save. Now all you have to do is provide whomever you wish to view this Gallery with the Password you have put in place.

NOTE: To remove Password Protection on a Gallery simply delete/empty the password field and press Save.

Galleries that are marked private will not be linked to from the main navigation on your Portfolio. Private Galleries will also be excluded from search engine robots such as Google and are never published in sitemaps and other feeds. Private Galleries can only be accessed by visitors who know the URL/Direct Link of the Gallery in question.

To configure this setting for any of your Galleries, click on Galleries at the top left of Crevado Admin:

Then click on the Gallery you wish to edit to select it:

Scroll down to the Gallery Settings area and here you will see that Privacy Control is the second option:

Select the Private Gallery option by clicking on it:

A pop-up at the top of the screen will confirm Privacy Control configuration has been updated:

At the bottom of the Privacy Controls box you will see a Direct Link (URL) is provided for this Gallery:

To the right of the Direct link displayed are two options:

  • To Copy the Direct Link to your Clipboard (Clipboard Icon).
  • To Email the Direct Link using your Email Application (Envelope Icon).

Firstly, to copy the Direct Link, click on the clipboard symbol as shown here:

When you click on the Copy to Clipboard button, a pop-up will confirm that the Direct Link has been successfully copied to your clipboard and you can copy and paste it wherever you want from there:

Secondly, you can Email the Direct Link for the Gallery to whomever you wish. Click on the envelope symbol as shown below:

When you click on the envelope symbol, your Email application will open. The name of the Gallery will be automatically entered into the Subject field of the Email and the Direct Link will be inserted into the body of the Email, as you can see here:

Now all you need to do is fill in the To field of the email and click Send and you are done!

How Do I Change My Crevado Account Password?

From Crevado Admin, click on the Account link on the top right of the page:

account link

Scroll down to the Your Password box and click on it:

Now enter your new password and confirm it by typing it a second time in to the Confirm Password field and then click Save:

A pop-up at the top of the page will confirm that your change of password has been successful.

NOTE: Remember to use your new password the next time you login to Crevado Admin!

Customizing SEO Meta Tags and Other Page Attributes on Your Crevado Online Portfolio

One of the most important things when you have built your online portfolio is to customize how the pages of your portfolio appear in search engines such as Google. The advantage of doing this is two-fold; it helps create clear information of what your site and pages contain when it appears in search engines such as Google and it also helps describe your page to search engines which in turn helps your page rank better in searches.

Without delving too deeply in to the technical side of things this task is accomplished using tags. The two most important tags concerning how your page appears in search engines are the Page Title and the Meta Description. The following screenshot illustrates how these tags are put to use when your site appears on the likes of Google:

online portfolio appearing in Google

As the name suggests the Page Title is quite simply a string of text which is used to describe your page. In the above screenshot the Page Title is a bit on the short side and perhaps would be better changed to something a little more lengthy and descriptive, for example "Balbao Park, San Diego CA - the nations largest urban cultural park". As can be seen above, the meta description plays an important role in terms of how your site is represented in search engine results.

Armed with this new fund of information you may be wondering how you can put this to use for your Crevado Online Portfolio.

How to Customize Page Titles and Meta Tags for the Pages on Your Crevado Portfolio:

To get started, click on the Pages section of Crevado Admin:

click pages section of Crevado admin

You can edit the properties of whatever page you want by clicking on the Page Properties (pencil) icon as shown below:

edit page properties by clicking on the pencil icon

A Page Properties popup will open. From the Page Settings tab of the Page Properties dialogue you can customize the Link Title, Page Title and URL of your page.

page property page settings tab

Did you know? Link Title is used to control the name of the page as it appears on your Portfolio navigation menu whereas Page Title controls the actual title of the page as it appears on your browser tab or Google etc. You can use this to your advantage, for example your 'About' page could have a Link Title 'About' whereas the Page Title can be more descriptive such as 'About Diego Marteniz Photography'.

Clicking on the SEO/Social tab within the Page Properties dialogue allows you to access the Meta Description and Meta Keywords as well as giving you the ability to specify the OpenGraph image for the page in question:

page property seo social tab

The OpenGraph image can be used to control what image is displayed when your Page is shared on Social media networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Google+. Facebook Recommends using an image up to 1200x630 pixels for the best results. For your convenience larger images are automatically resized to these Facebook endorsed dimensions.

Notes & Recommendations:

  • Meta descriptions can be any length, but search engines generally truncate snippets longer than 160 characters. It is best to keep meta descriptions between 150 and 160 characters.
  • Google typically displays the first 50-60 characters of a Page Title, or as many characters as will fit into a 512-pixel display. If you keep your titles under 55 characters, you can expect at least 95% of your titles to display properly. Keep in mind that search engines may choose to display a different title than what you provide in your HTML. Titles in search results may be rewritten to match your brand, the user query, or other considerations.
  • It's widely believed that the Meta Description and Keywords play a part in how you rank on Google specifically. This is not true as Google announced in September of 2009 that neither meta descriptions nor meta keywords factor into Google's ranking algorithms for web search. Google uses meta descriptions to return results when searchers use advanced search operators to match meta tag content, as well as to pull preview snippets on search result pages, but it's important to note that meta descriptions do not to influence Google's ranking algorithms for normal web search.

Can I Create Sub-galleries Within My Crevado Online Portfolio?

You can achieve sub-galleries by leveraging a special type of Page called a Gallery Collection. By default you will already have one Gallery Collection which is initially called 'My Work' (you may have renamed it already by now). The following simple steps show you how to create a page structure which supports multiple sub-gallery sections:

From Crevado Admin click on Pages at the top left of the screen:

Now, to create a new Gallery Collection click on the Create Page button on the right:

Then change the Page Type drop down menu option to Gallery Collection:

Now give the Gallery Collection a Link Title and Page Title and then click Create:

Once you have done this and created your Gallery Collection you can switch back to the Galleries section of Crevado Admin by clicking on Galleries at the top left of the page:

You will notice things have changed a little. The Galleries section now lists each Gallery Collection along with any Galleries inside them as shown below, we have two Gallery Collections, Photography and Portfolio:

From here you can drag and drop Galleries from one collection to another. As you can see below, we have dragged three Galleries from the Portfolio Gallery Collection into our new Photography Gallery Collection:

You can also see a break down of your Gallery Collections and the Galleries that are nested underneath each one by clicking on Pages from Crevado Admin. From here you can also drag and drop the Galleries to move them between your different Gallery Collections:

Finally, when you are creating a Gallery, if you have more than one Gallery Collection created you will be prompted to specify what collection the new Gallery gets created in.

After you have created your new page, you will be taken to the Page Content Editor where you can edit the content of your Custom Content Page.

NOTE: The Content Editor toolbar will appear at the bottom of the screen as shown below:

Controlling the Formatting and Layout of the Content on your Page:

The Content Editor Toolbar allows you to control the formatting and styles of the text on your page as well as insert/edit images etc.

The first button on the toolbar is the formatting button:

The formatting button allows you to control the formatting/styling of text. There are a number of different Formatting Styles that can be applied to the text in your Custom Content Pages. These styles can be customized using the Theme Editor and then applied using the formatting button. Typical styles include the Normal Text of the page and the Heading Sizes 1 to 6 which are ordered by importance i.e. Heading 1 is the primary heading of the page. Here is a screenshot of the list:

How these styles appear i.e. the Font Faces used, the Colors and the Font Sizes are controlled using the Crevado Theme Editor. For more information on how to customize these styles using the Theme Editor please see the following article for more information on customizing styles.

Adding Lists to Content Pages:

Once you click on Edit, the additional image options available are:

  • To give the image an Alt Text/Title - This is the written copy that appears in place of an image on a webpage if the image fails to load on a user's screen. This text helps screen-reading tools describe images to visually impaired readers and allows search engines to better crawl and rank your website.
  • Add a Caption to the image.
  • Adjust the Position of the image - i.e. none, left, center or right.
  • Adjust the Image Sizing.
  • Add a Link to the image - Link the image to a URL so when someone clicks on the image, they will be brought to that URL.

Then click on Insert link:

A pop-up will open. Here you simply type the URL that you want to link to and enter some text to describe the link and then click on Insert:

Then click Insert. You will then be taken back to the content editor page. Your e.g. "Email Me" link will now be visible on that page. Don't forget to click Save on the Content Editor toolbar before you exit the Content Editor.

Customizing Font Colors Using the Content Editor:

Note: You can change font colors using the Content Editor but be aware that these font colors will override any theme styles (including colors assigned via the Theme Editor).

Select the text you wish to change the color of and then click on the Font Color button:

A pop-up will open displaying a color chart:

You can change the selected text color by clicking on a new color from the color picker pop-up.

In addition to setting font colors, you can also highlight text. The process is essentially the same, select the text you wish to highlight and click the font color button on the toolbar. This time simply click the highlight tab from the color picker pop-up and click on a new highlight color to apply it.

Here is a sample Portfolio in Live Edit Mode:

Customizing the Look of Your Portfolio Using the Crevado Theme Editor

The layout, look & feel of your portfolio is controlled primarily by the Crevado Theme you're using. There's a wide variety of Themes to choose from and depending on the type of work you're showcasing some themes will work better than others. You can change the active Theme at any time and once you've applied a new Theme you can further personalize the Theme using the Crevado Theme Editor by changing font sizes, font faces, backgrounds and colors and more.

Customizing the look of your Portfolio is easy and there are plenty of options to choose from. To start, from Crevado Admin just click the Customize button:

  • Sasha: A fully responsive, clean, modern and spacious theme. Perfect for displaying lots of series of media or if you have a large number of projects you wish to showcase.
  • Zara: Similar layout to Sasha but features an alternating list-based gallery layout - perfect for telling a story about your work.
  • Sleek: A slick modern theme with fixed header and snazzy animations. Best suited with Portrait style images.

You can see the different options by clicking on the forwards arrow > (on the right) or backwards arrow < (on the left) or by clicking on the indicators located underneath. All are highlighted by red arrows in the following image:

Clicking on the green Apply Theme button selects it.

Note: For best results, we recommend that you spend some time deciding on your Theme and specifically whether you want a Light or Dark finish; how you want your Crevado Online Portfolio to look. It will mean less editing for you later! :-)

Once you have chosen your preferred Theme you can then further personalize it by clicking on the Customize Theme button or link, as shown below:

This launches the Crevado Theme Editor.

The Theme Editor is broken down in to several sections:

  • Header & Logos
  • Font & Icon Sizes

  • Colors & Backgrounds
  • Theme Options
  • Custom CSS
  • Reset Theme

Click a section heading to expand the options within:

Any changes you make such as options, colors, font sizes etc. will be automatically reflected on the preview pane on the right. Once you're happy with the changes you've made you need to save them to make them permanent by clicking the green Apply Changes button at the top left of the page:

A pop-up will ask you to confirm that you wish to make the change to your Crevado Online Portfolio. Simply click OK to confirm the change:

The Favicon is a small icon which can be used to associate with your website in the context of a web browser. For more information on Favicons please see Customizing the Favicon of your Online Portfolio.

The Portfolio Logo option simply allows you to use a graphical image in the place of the title of your Crevado Portfolio.

Font & Icon Sizes

As the name suggests, the Font Sizes section allows you to modify the font sizes of various different elements of text on your Crevado portfolio in addition to the Icon sizes.

You can modify the font sizes by clicking on the plus/minus buttons. When you modify font sizes the changes are automatically applied in the preview pane on the right of the screen so you can see how things will look before you make any changes permanent.

Typography

The Typography section allows you to control the font faces which are used throughout your Crevado Portfolio. To change the font face simply select a new font from the dropdown once you have changed the font the preview pane on the right hand side will be updated to show you how it looks:

The fonts listed in the dropdowns are from the Google Font library. You may wish to browse the various different fonts there to get a feel for which font suits your tastes best.

Colors & Backgrounds

This section allows you to control background colors and images as well as font colors of various elements on your Portfolio. For example, you can use this section to modify the color of your Crevado Portfolio title text, of the background color of your portfolio.

You simply click on the color scale next to the area you wish to change and it will open into a color picker box where you can select the color you want:

Once you change a color the preview pane will update automatically to reflect your new choice.

Theme Options

This section allows you to control the different options available in your active theme. The options available here will depend on your current theme and will include elements such as the ability to configure thumbnail sizes, control over padding/margins etc.
